{"id":102,"date":"2009-02-03T11:48:42","date_gmt":"2009-02-03T18:48:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.computerjourney.com\/blog\/?p=102"},"modified":"2009-02-03T11:48:42","modified_gmt":"2009-02-03T18:48:42","slug":"teaching-community-college-extension-courses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.computerjourney.com\/blog\/teaching-community-college-extension-courses\/","title":{"rendered":"Teaching Community College Extension Courses"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I have been teaching extension courses locally at <a title=\"West LA College Extension\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wlac.edu\/westside\" target=\"_blank\">West LA College<\/a> for around two years now (I\u00a0 will soon start teaching at <a title=\"El Camino College Community Education\" href=\"http:\/\/www.eccommunityed.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">El Camino College<\/a> as well), and I can easily say that it has been a wonderful experience.\u00a0 Teaching has allowed me to connect one-on-one with the target audience for my book <a title=\"Computer Zen\" href=\"\/resources\/products\/\"><em><strong>Computer Zen: A Journey to Better Computing<\/strong><\/em><\/a> and see how well the information comes across to real people.\u00a0 So far, the response has been very positive and I have branched out into teaching other classes.\u00a0 Click to read more&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><!--more-->In addition to teaching my <a title=\"Computer Tips &amp; Tricks\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wlac.edu\/westside\/WE_Computers.htm#Computer%20Tips%20&amp;%20Tricks\" target=\"_blank\">&#8220;Tips and Tricks&#8221;<\/a> class every semester, I also have taught Introduction to MS Word, Introduction to MS Excel, and Intermediate Word and Excel.\u00a0 Those classes were taught multiple times as a result of the normal instructor being ill for a while and needing coverage.\u00a0 It&#8217;s hard picking up someone else&#8217;s curriculum and teaching based on it without having seen them actually teach the course first, but I learned a lot from the experience.\u00a0 This semester, I am also offering a <a title=\"Social Networking 101\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wlac.edu\/westside\/WE_Computers.htm#What%20Are%20Facebook,%20MySpace,%20YouTube%20&amp;%20Blogging%20All%20About\" target=\"_blank\">Social Networking<\/a> introductory class for the first time based on some input from the extension staff.\u00a0 It should be a fun and informative class.<\/p>\n<p>The majority of the students that have enrolled in the classes I have taught are middle aged or older.\u00a0 This is really nice because they are very willing to learn, attentive, and appreciative of their newfound knowledge.\u00a0 I also never have issues with discipline or disruptions.\u00a0 Typically, they are professionals looking to enhance their career skillset or are just looking for some new tools that might open doors to new opportunties.\u00a0 Either way, the class environments are usually really enjoyable for everyone involved.<\/p>\n<p>For all of you out there that aren&#8217;t super comfortable with your computer use, or want to master a new program, or just want to take your knowledge to the next level, I highly recomend you check out the extension courses offered by your local community college.\u00a0 Usually, the classes are pretty affordable and you can come out of them with a lot learned in a very short amount of time.\u00a0 The one bit of advice I would offer, is that you should plan on taking what you learn and practicing it on your own at home so that the information really sinks in and becomes part of your applied routine.\u00a0 Sometimes students have expectations that they&#8217;ll be able to retain everything after a 6 hour class, but that&#8217;s just unrealistic.\u00a0 Turning skills into habit takes time and repetition.\u00a0 If you keep that in mind, you&#8217;ll get a lot out of the experience.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>I have been teaching extension courses locally at West LA College for around two years now (I\u00a0 will soon start teaching at El Camino College as well), and I can easily say that it has been a wonderful experience.\u00a0 Teaching has allowed me to connect one-on-one with the target audience for my book Computer Zen: [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[3,8],"tags":[24,102,98,100,95,99,96,101,97],"class_list":["post-102","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","hentry","category-basic-computer-use","category-tips","tag-computer","tag-el-camino-college","tag-excel","tag-social-networking","tag-teach","tag-tips-tricks","tag-use","tag-west-la-college","tag-word"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.computerjourney.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/102","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.computerjourney.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.computerjourney.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.computerjourney.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/1"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.computerjourney.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=102"}],"version-history":[{"count":2,"href":"https:\/\/www.computerjourney.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/102\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":104,"href":"https:\/\/www.computerjourney.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/102\/revisions\/104"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.computerjourney.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=102"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.computerjourney.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=102"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.computerjourney.com\/blog\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=102"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
